Hair Loss In Men And Women: Causes And Remedies
By ajay shringi
Most people suffer from hair loss at some point in their lives. The hair loss can be either partial, a condition often termed as alopecia arieta, or complete, leaving a bald head. Partial hair loss is often also called “pattern baldness”, since the person usually loses the hair in a prominent M-shaped area on the head. Hair loss can occur in both men and women, and has both physical and psychological origins.

Hair Loss in men

There can be many causes for hair loss in men. Hereditary hair loss is quite common, as are malnutrition, improper hair care and mental stress. Hair loss in men can also be caused by hormonal imbalance. Men produce the hormone dihydrotestosterone (DHT) in their bodies. Increased levels of DHT in the body can constrict hair follicles to an extent that the hair will simply asphyxiate and fall off. To add to the woes of the person, the hair follicles stay constricted even after the hairs fall off, thus preventing the growth of new hair. Hormonal imbalance in men is hard to treat. Some drugs can suppress the creation of these hormones, but those often have several unwanted side effects, such as, reduced libido, outbreak of acne, repeated occurrences

of headaches, gynecomastia, i.e., growth of breasts in men, etc.

Hair Loss in women

Hair loss in women is caused by almost similar conditions as in men. Even in women, absence of a proper hair care regimen, lack of nutrients in the body, or psychological stress play major roles behind hair loss. But, hormonal imbalance, due to production of androgens, and subsequently dihydrotestosterone (DHT), especially in the post-menopausal stage, can also cause hair loss. Women can suffer from female pattern baldness, quite similar to men. However, in women, the rate of hair fall is much lower than that in men. Telogen effluvium is another reason, in which some physically traumatic experience causes women to suffer from rapid hair fall. Pregnancy is one such experience. Besides, alopecia arieta is also prevalent among women.

Remedies of hair loss

Hair loss can be remedied in a number of ways. Home remedies can be used to prevent it to some extent in the initial stages, but later on, special treatments may be required to stop hair fall. Surgical hair transplants, hair replacement therapies, and the use of medicated shampoos can help in preventing hair loss.
